Not all bees live in hives or produce honey en masse. Honey bees do, but solitary bees  do not. There are many types of solitary bees (over 200 in the U.K)..... mason bees, leaf cutter bees,  and mining bees all come under this category. What classifies them, is that they individually make solitary nests, either in holes in the ground, holes in walls or in hollow plant stems.
