Bumble bees are members of the genus Bombus, in the family Apidae. There are 24 species in the U.K, but only eight of these are common.... (they are Buff tailed, White tailed, Red tailed, Garden, Early, Tree, Heath and Common Carder bees).
Their nests are small and they do not store much honey. They are larger than other species of bee, and hairier, so they can cope with the cold more, and will come out on mild days in Spring earlier than the smaller, less fluffy bees.
They do not swarm and are not angry and aggressive..... Only the females can sting, but they have to be pretty cross, before they will.
