The brief for this garden was to make a North facing border on clay soil; exposed site, so nothing too tall, to incorporate limey greens, purple and orange plants.....seen from the living room window all year round........no mention of it being interesting for bees.....however....!!!!
Stage one...incorporating 20 bags of green waste compost to improve drainage and soil structure.
Stage two...planting up.
Good bee plants in this design are Hellebore, Pulmonaria (Lungwort), Hardy Geraniums, Heuchera, Geums, violas, foxgloves and Sarcococca.
The shadows and light in this lovely space are very intense and as the sun moves across the border it acts like a spotlight, catching the colours of the Cotinus leaves and the dogwood stems and making the grasses sparkle.....I have tried to enhance this dramatic natural bonus .....it will be interesting to see how it develops over the coming year.
